Indigo

Guatemala

Indigo is a small business that’s making a big social impact in rural communities throughout Guatemala. Initially formed to support the many women who were widowed as a result of Guatemala’s 15-year civil war, the organization now works with artisans from many indigenous communities providing craft training and marketing their products to larger markets. Indigo is deeply committed to employing sustainable and eco-friendly practices, most notably with their extensive range of natural dying techniques. As the founder Olga Reich explains, “We do not use any chemicals or contaminating products in our work and this is what we do to help Mother Earth.” In addition to providing income-generation opportunities, Indigo provides its artisans with health education courses and continuous training to improve their weaving skills.
