In Kibera, the sprawling urban slum in Nairobi, residents face extreme work, food, housing and water insecurity. Mercantilia offers fair living wages to a small group of artisans, who create contemporary jewelry from metals and discarded and locally sourced bone and horn. Artisans also receive medical care and training to advance their marketable skills.
