Smateria works with artisans in Cambodia to create stylish accessories through creative recycling techniques. The social enterprise was founded in 2006 on two basic principles: first, provide income-generating opportunities for women in Cambodia; second, raise awareness of the importance of sustainability in the developing world by recycling discarded, everyday materials and turning them into contemporary accessories. Smateria employs more than 60 women, many of who are young mothers and survivors of sex slavery and exploitation. Many single mothers are prevented from finding work because they cannot afford to send their children to reliable daycare centers. To further encourage female employment, Smateria has created an on-site daycare center, complete with trained nannies and educators.
